This study investigated farmers concentrated residential areas on the outskirts of Shanghai in the process of urbanization, which appear since the 1990s, especially in the late 1990s. Farmers have experienced changes in the home, and what is more important is, changes in living patterns, since they moved from the villages to residential areas. "Living patterns", which I proposed, referring to the changes of order in space, of daily life, and of thoughts. The study investigated how farmers concentrated residential areas planed out , mainly from the specific planning policies, but also highlighted the background of urban land use in China. Farmers concentrated residential areas, produced in such a logic of urbanization. Farmers, as the agent, still with the habitus of village life, face different order in space, their daily life also need to re-construct, and therefore their thoughts will change . This living space is full of sense of design, modernity, but ignore the local history, tradition and habitus. Thus, it's meaningless for the life of the farmers. Therefore, it's necessary for farmers to participate in the planning or practice, through which might change space into a meaningful place. This study tried to use "deep description", one of the classic anthropological research methods, to focus on fanners' life, practice and habitus, thus for emphasis the importance of their participation, in order to avoid the tendency of "otherness" in the urbanization of the outskirts .
