What this dissertation wants to explore is the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty's redefinition on April 17, 1996, and its influence on Sino-Japan relations. Based on the historical reviews of the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty, this dissertation analyzes the background and process of the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty's redefinition. Moreover, the influence of the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty on Sino-Japan relations is also stated here. Meanwhile, the countermeasures that China should take are suggested. The fundamental purpose of this study is to reveal the influence of the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty on Sino-Japan relations and therefore promote the development of Sino-Japan relations. The main part of this dissertation is divided into four chapters. Chapter one is about the historical reviews of the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty. This chapter comprises two parts: the first part is about the signing of the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty; the second is about the revising of it. On September 8,1951, the "Security Treaty between the United States and Japan" was signed, which symbolizes the formal foundation of the Security Guarantee Arrangement between the United States and Japan, and symbolizes the establishment of the U.S.-Japan Strategic Alliance. After the first important amendments added to the "Security Treaty between the United States and Japan" on January 19, 1960, the Japanese status was enhanced in the alliance, however, the basic structure of Japan's security protected by the U.S. military forces was not altered. The second chapter analyses the background and process of the redefinition of the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty. The U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty's redefinition was carried out under the influence of many factors, such as the changes of the international structure after the Cold War, the reversion of the U.S.-Japan relative power, the temporary resolution of the North Korean nuclear crisis and the alleviation tendency of the U.S.-Japan trade friction. The United States and Japan manage to seek their common interests and mediate their disputes. Afterwards the redefinition, the new name of the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty is "Japan-U.S. Joint Declaration on Security—Alliance for the 21st Century".In the chapter three, the author discusses the influence of the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty on Sino-Japan relations. The author emphasizes that the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty encourages the development of Japan's military power, breaks up the strategic balance in Asia area, hedges against the peaceful rise of China, hinders the peaceful unification of China, worsens the strategic conditions of China, and limits the development of Sino-Japan relations. On the other hand, the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty acts some positive role in a sense. It limits the development of Japan's military power to a greater or lesser extent, therefore ensures the temporary steady condition in Asia area. Some countermeasures that China should take are stated in the fourth chapter. The author directs that we should keep clear head to the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty, use the brush between the United States and Japan to cancel its negative influence on Sino-Japan relations, and use its positive factors to limit the development of Japan's military power. In the conclusion of this dissertation, we can see that the U.S.-Japan Security Guarantee Treaty is the endurance of the Cold War's thoughts, and its influence on Sino-Japan relations will not change in a short time.
