The introduction of China's New Security Concept (NSC) in the late nineties signaled the ushering in of Chinas' new diplomatic strategy. The NSC and its advocacy of comprehensive multilateral approaches to conflict resolution in the international arena directly influenced the trajectory of Chinese engagement in Central Asia. The birth of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a product of this new security approach. This thesis aims at using the case of the SCO to analyze China's multilateral diplomacy in Central Asia. It recognizes the significance of the SCO as a regional organization through which China executes its foreign policy in Central Asia.
