Iran, boasting 4000-5000 years-old history and owning abundant petrol resources as well as important and strategic location, has always been the attention of other countries. Since 2003, when Iran's nuclear issue resurfaced, Iran has become one of the focuses of the international community once again. The U.S. goes mostly against Iran's nuclear program. In order to stop Iran's uranium enrichment, the U.S. conducts diplomatic game with Iran on one hand, and goes all out to coordinate with the EU, Russia and China on the other hand, in an attempt to maximize the national interests of the U.S.. Except for the introduction, this dissertation analyses and explores the standpoints and motives of the U.S. on the Iran nuclear issue with four chapters. The first chapter introduces the development of the Iran nuclear issue and explores the nature of Iran's nuclear program. It is believed that Iran's nuclear issue is just a case of the nuclear proliferation after the Cold War. The U.S. is the first country to help Iran with its nuclear plan, which started from the Pahlavi Dynasty. However, the West stops nuclear cooperation with Iran since 1979, when the Islamic Republic of Iran was built after the Islamic Revolution. From then on, any nuclear activities in Iran was considered as severe nuclear proliferation. So far, the Security Council of the United Nations has passed 5 sanction agreements on Iran's nuclear issue. However, the international community hasn't found any evidence hinting weaponization of Iran's nuclear activities. The second chapter shows the confrontation between the U.S. and Iran. It is believed by Iranians that the nuclear capability can help Iran ease perilous geopolitical security, confront with the U.S., revitalize Iran and gain tremendous economic and environmental benefits. However, Iran's nuclear ambition invades strategies of the U.S. in the Middle East, including termination of Iran's Islamic regime, transformation of the International Nuclear Nonproliferation Regime, safeguard of the energy security and regional stability of the Middle East, assurance of the hegemony of the U.S.. Thus, the U.S. has spared no efforts to prevent Iran's nuclear program. The tools used by the U.S. can be summarized as: medias, military threats, economic sanctions, and " Color Revolution".The third chapter focuses on the standing differences and diplomatic contest between the U.S. and other powers, including the EU, Russia and China. Although the EU is the traditional ally of the U.S., it still expressed not a few different ideas from the U.S. on the Iran's nuclear issue, which involving the geopolitical security as well as the economic and political interests of the EU. Russia benefits most from Iran's nuclear program. It conducts nuclear and military cooperation with Iran, provoking the U.S. very much. The U.S. has been persuading Russia to keep consistent with the voice of the U.S.. China is involving Iran's nuclear issue deeply and reluctantly. Considering its political and economic security, China sounds different from the U.S. on the issue. The fourth chapter looks into the future of Iran's nuclear plan. For more than economic and technical reasons, the U.S. and Israel are prone not to brandish a military option on Iran in a short term. As for Iran, it may continue its nuclear program in a principle featuring "do something and not to do something". That means, Iran may choose to develop its civil nuclear facilities, possess advanced nuclear technology and a complete nuclear industry system and not to produce nuclear weapons. However, it will develop the necessary nuclear capability, with which it can produce nuclear weapons in a very short time if necessary.
