Based on the physiological and psychological characteristics of adolescents and along with the trend of sexual precocity, sexually transmitted diseases and the spread of AIDS in the20th century, the sexual problems and sex education of adolescents gain national attentions. Among many sex educations, abstinence education is unique and the unique educational ideaof which is encouraging teenagers to wait to experience sex until marriage. Abstinence education sprang up in the 90's of 20th century which emphasized on teaching correct knowledge of sex for students to maintain chastity bodily and spiritly. The essence of abstinence education was sexual moral education which advocated adolescents to respect each other mutually, to control the self and to protect the self. Abstinence education made great contributions to the United States for solving the problems of premarital sex, premarital pregnancy, the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and the related psychological and social problems. As akind of successful model of sex education, abstinence education is worth concerning and studying. At present, China's sex education of adolescents is at an initial stage of developmentand has some problems. Referencing the successful experiences of abstinence education of adolescents in the United States to promote the development and reform of the sex educationof adolescents in our country has great meanings.This paper includes six parts. The first part is the guidance. It introduces the topic selection and some related concepts of the study, analyses the existing research of abstinence education of adolescents in the United States at home and abroad. The second part introduces the emergence and development of abstinence education of adolescents in the United States, which shows that the development of abstinence education has closed connection with the development of American society. The third part introduces the connotation, organizations of administration and types of abstinence education of adolescents in the United States. The fourth part analyses educational idea of abstinence education, that is encouraging teenagers to wait to experience sex under a backgroud of a healthy and mature marriage. The fifth part analysis the curricula and implementation of abstinence education of adolescents in the United States, enumerates four typical curricula of abstinence education. The sixth part puts forward the achievements, significances and disputes of abstinence education. The last part proposes three implications for the sex education of adolescents for our country. This paper suggests that we should set up the guiding ideology of sex education of adolescents explicitly that focuses on sexual moral education, reform the model of sexual education of adolescents, encourage abstinence education among adolescents and launch the study of sex education of adolescents in China.
