Political identity is an ancient and fundamental topic in the domain of political science, namely how to win the trust of common people. The stability of political ruling depends on the political identity of people to a large extent. Since reform and opening up, the contemporary Chinese political identity has changed significantly. Among them, there are both the great progress and unfavorable factors in political identity of Chinese citizens. To some extent, the negative factors in the political identity of citizens resulted in the loss of the identity to the ruling party, the government, the socialist system and Marxist beliefs. Therefore, the study of political identity in China is of great theoretical and practical significance. Only through careful study of political identity of Chinese citizens can we build a harmonious socialist society. The paper was composed of four parts. In the first part, I discussed the concept, functions and logic of political identity, in my attempt to construct an theoretical framework used to analyze the political identity in contemporary China. Secondly, using this theoretical framework, I reviewed the historical changes of political identity since the People's Republic of China was found. Thirdly, I analyzed the challenges for political identity in contemporary China. Lastly, based on the above analysis I tried to put forward the ways of the construction of political identity in contemporary China.
