With the development of modern society,English, particularly oral English plays a more and more increasingly significant role in China. However, spoken English teaching in Chinese senior high schools is not satisfying at all and it is agreed that it needs great improvement.School-Based Curriculum Development (SBCD), originated from Britain, Australia, and Israel in the 1970s. Since then SBCD has been taken into account in China. Lots of English teachers are encouraged to devote to it. In the practice of speaking teaching the author finds the textbook speaking materials, to some degree, lack abundance, authenticity, readability which leads to students'speaking interests falling down. Owing to that the thesis made a research on the school-based oral English textbook using in No.3 Senior High School of Jiaonan.This thesis consists of four chapters. In the part of introduction the reason for this research is stated. Chapter 1 begins with defining the term"curriculum". Then it makes a study of the present situation of spoken English teaching and learning in senior high schools. It also describes the oral English teaching requirements in the newly-issued curriculum. Chapter Two reviews the linguistic theories in relation to this study. It mainly refers to communicative competence introduced by Hymes in the 1970's. It also mentions the features of spoken English. The Guiding principles of the compiling of the school-based oral English textbook to be used in this experiment and the contents of it are illustrated in this chapter. Chapter Three is the experimental design of this thesis and also discusses the results of the experiment. The results show that the experiment is practical and effective. Chapter Four mainly deals with the implications during the experiment. The thesis ends with the conclusion of the research and the existing problems for further research.Either English teaching reform or SBCD is a huge project, so this thesis only makes a preliminary and tentative research, the results of which may be useful in the teaching of spoken English. To build a more perfect teaching practice, more efforts will be needed in the future.
