Writing is one of the most important means for people to communicate and also a necessary skill for EFL learners to master. At present the English writing situation in senior high schools is not optimistic. Although many scholars and English teachers have racked their brains in it, the effect is not obvious and the students'writing has never reached the satisfactory result. There exist two problems in Senior High school writing teaching: 1) some teaching methods are no longer suitable today; 2) the students are not interested in English writing and even afraid of writing a composition. What they will do is just to translate the Chinese idea into English, let alone the theme, structure or creativity. It is an issue on how to improve English writing teaching and students'writing ability.Professor Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has shown through his extensive research that when people are engaged—even absorbed—in challenging but controllable tasks that are normally intrinsically motivating, they can experience a unique, enjoyable and worth-while psychological state, referred to as flow. Flow leads people to an optimal state, where they can enjoy themselves in work or study. This study is intended to test whether the immersion theory is effective in English writing for the Senior High students. In this thesis, the writer tries to answer the following questions through the experiment and the questionnaire:1. Whether the condition of immersion can improve the English writing ability of Senior High students;2. What factors influence students'condition of immersion. Through the experiment, we can conclude:1. Students can benefit from immersion (flow) theory.2. Students'condition of immersion is influenced by good psychological environment, clear goals, sufficient input and appropriate feedback. Therefore the teacher should create an optimal English learning environment for students to promote foreign or second language development.
