Hong Zongli, a well-known contemporary educationalist in Chinese teaching. He has devoted himself to the study and practice of Chinese teaching since 1960, when he graduated from his university. Hong contributed in the reform and development of contemporary Chinese teaching in China, by working in such areas as the practice of teaching, exploring teaching theory, text book reforms and comparative study of mother tongue in China and abroad.This essay, divided into five parts, studies Hong's thought in Chinese teaching.Part One, Introduction. The part outlines the background of Hong's thoughts in Chinese teaching, by briefly introducing Hong's life, the motive, objectives, scope and methods of this thesis, and the relevant literature review of previous studies.Part Two, The core of Hong's thoughts in Chinese language teaching. This part explores the core of Hong's thought, the philosophical foundation of his thought about the "chain" in Chinese teaching. The part will further analyze his theories on the "Five Talks."Part Tree, Hong's outlooks on Chinese teaching. The chapter compares and studies the teaching method of Hong's "Yindu"(introductive reading) with the method of guide reading (Dao du) in the 1980s. Besides, the part also looks into the role of creative thinking in Hong's thought on teaching.Part Four, Hong's thought on Chinese text books. This part compares Hong's thoughts and the Chinese text book since some hundreds years ago, to analyze the system of Hong's way of text book designing and his other efforts like the comparative study of mother tongue of China and a foreign country.Part Five. The practical meaning of the Hong Zongli phenomenon. This part explores how Hong Zongli's development and outlooks on teaching influence the whole teaching profession.As the first to study Hong Zongli's thoughts on Chinese teaching, this paper systematically and roundly analyze Hong's thoughts, exploring his philosophical foundation, and to try to explain the meaning of the Hong Zongli phenomenon also by talk about how he has treated and tradition and by discussing the issue of the development of the teaching profession.The thesis based its study method on material historical point of view, making use of modern theories and methods. The Thesis takes the view that the study of Hong's thought bears practical meaning in course reforming and Chinese teaching.
