A Study On National Basketball Association's Activities And Its Influence In China

Sport could be the bridge of communication and friendship between peoples of different countries. The most well-known example is the early 70's "Ping Pong Diplomacy", which played a very important role in Sino-US relations. This paper studies the world's top basketball organization, the National Basketball Association (NBA) in China's activities and impacts upon China. As a non-state organization, NBA in many ways has greatly developed and exerted a far-reaching influence in China.The main body of this paper is composed of four sections. The first part is an introduction to the research status on the related areas in China and abroad, the main idea of the study and its significance. This article studies how NBA influences on Chinese economy, society, sports and the national image. The main question is what influence of a transnational Non-governmental organization upon a sovereign state.The second part is the first chapter. It mainly reviews on the general development and the status of NBA in China. NBA has been in China for more than three decades and achieved remarkable development. This chapter analyzes reasons of NBA's success in China.The third part includes the second, third, fourth and fifth chapters. It respectively studies NBA's activities in and their impacts upon China, from the perspectives of business, society and culture, and sports. NBA's influence upon itself and China are significant and profound. Firstly, these influences are reflected in the win-win commercial relations directly. Secondly, they give positive enlightenment for Chinese sport industry. Finally, it changes values and beliefs and their attitudes of consumption of Chinese people. The fifth chapter is focusing on analyzing NBA's role in changing China's national image in America and the world. As a non-governmental business and sports organizations, NBA functions as a bridge of communication between America and China. On the one hand, it makes more Chinese people understanding America. On the other hand, through increasing of Chinese elements in NBA, more and more Americans get to know more about China. Especially through the good image of Yao Ming, many Americans are gaining a good impression on China.The fourth part is conclusion and recommendations. While NBA is earning commercial interests, all their activities make an important impacts on China. It is suggested that China should make use of NBA as such a platform to shape China's more positive image of China and to stable Sino-US relations.
