A man who excells in self-management may not necessarily succeed, but a successful man must possess the ability of self-management. Nowadays, students grow up in favorable circumstances and therefore are lacking in self-management ability,which causes them to depend greatly on parents and teachers, expecting their help in study and life. As a result, an urgent problem are facing all related teachers,parents as well as students, that is, how to improve students'autonomous learning ability and self-management ability.Through data studies and survey research,the essay introduces the concept of both autonomous learning ability and self-management ability. It also overviews the present situation of study in both fields, and conducts a series of analysis and action studies.With the help of plenty of questionnaire survey, the author concludes that quite a number of high school students are weak in autonomous learning ability and self-management ability, and their schools along with teachers have not played a proper role in helping them. The author is convinced that the efficient strategy of cultivating these two ability includes: creating a healthy environment both in families and in schools, which can raise students'awareness of self-management; conducting classroom teaching reform, a precondition of self-management ability;participating in different sorts of management activities in the school, which offers them experiences; developing high competence teachers,the guarantee of self-management ability.As for students, most of the school time is spent on subject study. Therefore,the author has done experimental research in cultivating students'autonomous learning ability in biology. The research is conducted in two parallel classes of Senior one in Jiangyan No.2 High School.The author has made comparison of students'performance between the experimental class and the other one, and besides, a questionnaire survey is also conducted. The results show that students in the experimental class have improved greatly in their autonomous learning ability and self-management ability,and they have changed in a positive way no matter in their learning attitude or behavior. Therefore they have made favorable achievements in their study. All the above give us every reason to believe that the teaching method that encourages autonomous learning has a positive effect in cultivating students'autonomous learning ability.As a challenging and complicated task, the research of how to improve students'autonomous learning ability and self-management ability requires much study.
