English is the most widely used language in international economy, technology and communication. It is an important tool to get all sorts of information in the world and in international communication. And it is also the major foreign language taught in China's basic education. The teaching material is the important component to implement English curriculum and is one of the guarantees to realize the teaching program. Teaching activities are organized based on the text books. What's more, textbook is the important source for students to obtain the related knowledge, the skills and the study strategies. It is an important prerequisite to achieve the teaching goals to choose and use appropriate teaching materials. With the development of curriculum reform and foreign language teaching, more and more teaching materials pour into the market. And different kinds of text books are available for the students and teachers. Then how to evaluate the textbooks? How should the teachers use the new materials?The experimental version of New Senior English for China has been used in Huhhot since September in 2007. In spite of the fact that English teaching has greatly benefited from this text book, it still needs improving in some aspects. This paper tries to find out something about the service conditions of this textbook on the basis of theoretical analysis of the text. At the same time, try to analyze the reasons of the problems and make an attempt to give some advice on how to make better use of the textbook. This paper is mainly divided into six chapters.Chapter one introduces a brief situation and importance of the teaching materials reform, as well as the purpose, significance and contents of the research.Chapter Two expounds the related theories of textbooks and the complication as well as the evaluation, including the definition, the function and the type of the teaching materials. Besides, the theoretical foundation, the principles and the evaluation criteria of textbook compilation are involved.Chapter Three points out the teaching goals, the guiding principles of material compilation, as well as a brief introduction to the textbook by means of text analysis.Chapter Four investigates and analyses the service conditions of the teaching materials, based on the data from the teachers' and students' questionaires.Chapter Five discusses about the problems of the textbooks when used and summarizes teaching material's characteristic according to the data.The last chapter is about the research conclusion and the suggestions. .Through the foregoing analysis of the material's text and the questionnaires, the author has drawn a conclusion and offer some advice to the compiler and the users of the textbooks, especially the teachers,according to the investigation result, in order that the textbook can play a better role in teaching and learning.
