English coursebook is teaching material aimed to achieve Englishcurriculum goal and based on English curriculum standard to systemicallyelaborate English subject contents. It is materialization of English curriculumstandard and also important resources for both sides of teachers and studentsin English teaching and learning. It is also vital symbol to measure thestandard of the English education of a country or a region. Our country’s newround elementary education curriculum reform implements coursebookdiversification policy and there are many kinds of coursebook. Therefore,teachers should comprehend the curriculum standard accurately and study,elect, use coursebook better to achieve the curriculum teaching goal and meetstudent’s learning needs.From2005, Hohhot Junior High Schools has used New Standard Englishnearly seven years long. New Standard English is a kind of new coursebookbased on the2001version of English Curriculum Standard (ExperimentalManuscript). Now, the Ministry of Education has launched the2011versionof Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard having its newrequirement in the property of English curriculum, the curriculum basic idea,the curriculum design, the curriculum goal, the classification standard,English teaching, the way of evaluation, the coursebook compilation, thereform and the development in the teaching material and curriculum resources.On this background, it is necessary to carry on the scientific and systematicalanalysis and research to know the situation of using the New Standard Englishin Hohhot and find its problems and the improving aspects. According to therequirement of the2011version of Compulsory Education English Curriculum Standard, the thesis provided some reference basis for revisingand improving the coursebook.The thesis defined core concepts related to the research and reviewtheories in English teaching material development, English teachingevaluation methods, some evaluation criterion at home and abroad. Based onthose theories, there was an analysis of the coursebook New Standard Englishwhich concerned the guiding principles, structural system, content and itscharacteristics and the design.According to the characteristics of the coursebook and the requirementof the curriculum standard, the author designed the questionnaire surveyanalyzed by statistic software SPSS19.0, combined with classroomobservation and teachers’ interview and made the following conclusion. NewStandard English can basically meet the teachers and students’ need andrequirement of curriculum standard. However, New Standard English also hasits improving aspects: the coursebook is too difficult, and some contents is indisorder; the listening material is fast and difficult; the activities and tasks arecomplex and they are not designed for students in different level from easy todifficult arrangement etc.Through the research, it is also found some problems that some Englishteachers have old concept when using the coursebook; their teaching methodsare single and boring; they ignore the students to play main role in learningEnglish; and they “teach the coursebook” in passive and mechanical way etc.Therefore, the problems affect the coursebook to play its advantages.Aimed to the problems, some suggestions were proposed to thecoursebook revision; and also gave the English teacher some advice whichincluded how to use the coursebook in effective way to improve teachingefficiency and how to enhance teacher’s own specialized accomplishment etc.
