In the wake of 21st century, with the arising of knowledge-based economy and the marching of globalization, a huge wave of revolution in the realm of education has already been in full swing. In the past twenty years, course books for high school teaching have been revised several times. The present versions are said to be the best ones, for they are founded on the basis of advanced modern educational theories. New Standard English published by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press is one of the new versions. Being a series of course books widely used by many high schools in China, timely evaluation of it is in need and of great significance.The introduction section is the initial part of this set of course books, but it is also easy to be neglected by teachers and educational experts. As the beginning part of the classroom teaching process, introduction plays the role of intriguing students' interest, activating old knowledge and leading in new knowledge. To bring problems of introduction to the surface, and to promote educational reform and advance, we have to put more emphasis on the introduction section of our course books.Grounded on the New English Curriculum Standards (NECS), and referring to teaching materials evaluation theory both home and abroad, this thesis did an analysis and research of the introduction section of the NSEC textbook. It is based on theories of education and linguistics, and founded by means of content analysis and questionnaire survey. Referring to several evaluation standards proposed by educators and education researchers, this thesis did a detailed analysis and evaluation of the text design and actual teaching effect of the introduction section. It intends to provide assistant and references to education researchers and promote the continuous perfection of course books and improvement of teaching.
