Students in our country started to learn English from third year of primary school since the year of 2001. Basic requirement on English teaching in primary school (on trial) points out that English teaching should create good language environment and enough practicing opportunity to learners. Vocabulary is the basic element of learning language, but there was not enough attention paid on it. There were some problems in vocabulary teaching:Not taking children's cognition development into consideration; employing unvaried teaching methods; not designing a systematic and comprehensive teaching plans. This paper is aimed to discuss the characters of English vocabulary teaching in primary school and the design of situation-based vocabulary teaching plan. Such analysis can provide valuable references and measures for primary vocabulary teaching and consequently improve vocabulary teaching as well as English teaching practice as a whole. In doing so, the following theories have been put into use in this paper:Theory of situated cognition, Information Processing Theory, Constructive Learning Theory, Communication Theory, Children's Cognitive Development Theory and Second Language Acquisition Theory.There are seven parts in this paper:Part one:Analysis of the characteristics of the situation-based English vocabulary teaching in primary school. The Engilish vocabulary teaching in primary school should have the following four characteristics—interesting, activity-based, task-based and actively-involved.Part two:English vocabulary teaching based on the cognition development of primary students. By analyzing the general characteristics of children's language learning process, their cognition development and social development, this part concludes that English vocabulary teaching in primary school should take into account children's psychology and age, and teach by optimizing and creating certain situation. Moreover, this part also discusses the influence of children's such characteristics on the design of vocabulary teaching plan.Part Three:Requirement on the design of teaching plan in English vocabulary teaching in primary school. Vocabulary teaching using situation-based method should be scientific and artistic, integrated, student-focused and creating the right situation.Part Four:Methods of designing the teaching plan in English vocabulary teaching in primary school. This part analyzes various methods in designing teaching plan and also put forward this paper's own method.Part Five:Ideas on designing of English vocabulary teaching plan in primary school. By analyzing primary students' need in learning and their characteristics during the teaching plan designing period, this part put forward the method to establish teaching goal, content, strategy, process and assessment design.Part Six:Examples for analyzing the teaching plan design in English vocabulary teaching. This part takes Unit6 At the Zoo Part A Let's learn from the second grade textbook(published by People's Education Press) as example to discuss teaching plan design.Part Seven:Conclusion. To improve students' ability in learning vocabulary, teaching plan should consider student's cognition characteristics, create situation, emoploy teaching assessment method that is suitable to primary student.
