Maps hold an important role in fundamental geographic education. With the continuous development of information technology, maps have experienced the transformation from traditional paper-style to newly electronic maps application based on internet and GIS. In the latest decade, the campaign for new geographic course standard which underlies ability-oriented education as the core has brought unique development opportunity for fundamental geographic education based on geographic information technology. The usage of paper-style atlas still prevails in current fundamental geographic education, which is obviously incongruous with that of information age. Although there are some domestic attempts for electronic maps teaching software based on GIS, the results of those efforts are undesirable. The main reasons are as follow:console version design makes the system impossible to acquire network resources and couldn't guarantee data updating. In addition, the function of the system module is too professional to be easily operated by teachers, not to mention the students. Furthermore, the high price of these softwares has greatly limited the access of the system to the public. Therefore, based on the research of the present situation home and abroad of applying GIS technology to aid middle school geographic teaching, this essay has put forward the essence and characteristics of electronic atlas based on GIS and applied to aid middle school geographic teaching. Furthermore, this essay has also discussed the technological framework, database building, prototype system and using methods of the Web version electronic atlas facing middle school geographic teaching. The whole electronic atlas is developed based on the Geoserver platform that is the product of the independent efforts of our laboratory team. I sincerely hope that all my efforts above would provide some help for GIS aiding fundamental geographic education in information age. This essay centers on the theme of "Research of electronic atlas aiding middle school geographic teaching and system prototype development ". Based on the 7th grade geographic teaching materials oriented towards Nine-Year-System Compulsory Education of Shanghai, our team have developed and designed this electronic atlas prototype system oriented towards fundamental geographic education. This essay is divided into six chapters:Chapter1, preface, mainly introduces background of the research and current research situation home and abroad. Mainly discussing the content design of the system. chapter2 has formulated the system from the aspects of structure framework, organizing system, functional module and so on. Chapter3, the technological type of the system, mainly elaborates on the types of the developing technology and developing thinking. Chapter4, data organization of the system, expounds from the aspects of data source, types of data, data processing, data quality control and so on. Chapter5 has mainly introduced the webpage realization of the functions of the system and one extended case of electronic map aiding geographic teaching. Chapter6, summary and future work to be done. This chapter has made a summary about the main content of this essay's research and put forward the unfinished work needed to be done in the future.
