In recent years, combined charts and calculations of question papers in junior high school chemistry competition are common. Students are often at loss when they are faced with complex charts, they had fearness of such questions. Therefore, scores on chart-calculation problems are varied in chemistry competition. In this study, we select three highest-ranked junior high school students of chemistry training class as subjects of a central school in Shanghai. Investigation, test, interview, and statistics are major research methods. We will examine four problems:(1)the students'ability to get information about chart-calculation problems; (2)the students'ability to process information; (3)the students'ability to use information; (4)the differences of boys and girls in ability to solve the chart-calculation problems.Through the research we found that:students' "getting information" capability also needs to be developed in further teaching activities; Students one-sided always pursue ways to solve problems; the capabilities of students to process information are different; students seldom use modeling ways to solve chart-calculation problems; students will meet difficulties when select appropriate chemical method to solve chart-calculation problems; students lack the ability to draw chart to solve chart-calculation problems; boys are better at solving the chart-calculation problems.
