American classrooms have been experiencing the largest influx of immigrant students since the beginning of the 20th century. The traditional education which assimilates the minority students to mainstream culture cannot satisfy the need of future education. In order to help all students acquire the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to participate in cross-cultural interactions and in personal, social, and civic action that will help make nation more democratic and just, the voice of developing multicultural education have been higher and higher since 1960s.However, facing this demand most teachers have limited ability to implement multicultural education. Therefore, it is necessary to carry out multicultural teacher education program which prepares teachers who are culturally responsive, and who can help close the achievement gap between mainstream students and students who are marginalized within U.S. schools and society. At the very beginning of the birth of multicultural teacher education, which was not be accepted by the most people because of the political and cultural reasons in the society in which the Anglo-Saxon culture had the dominant position. However, as the culture became more and more pluralistic and the population composition became more and more complex, multicultural teacher education had proved its necessity and rationality with the truth. Multicultural teacher education has been developing in a rapid speed especially in the recent years. Although there are some defects that need to be corrected, its achievements deserves our study and reference.Four parts are included in the dissertation.The first part analyses the outline of multicultural teacher education in America, including the definitions of related items, such as multiculturalism, multicultural education, multicultural teacher education, and the backgrounds of its emergence and theoretical basis. The development of the civil rights movement supplied appropriate environment. The cultural gap became broader between teachers and students, and the terrible situation of the students from weak power race group, and teachers'disadvantaged ability of multicultural pedagogy all accelarate the emergence of multicultural teacher education., whose theory basis is multiculturalism, and which is divided into three types, conservative, liberal and critical multiculturalism.The second part expounds the multicultural teacher education in America from the aspects of objects, curriculum, teaching, assessment and guarantee. In the objective facet, multicultural teacher education of the USA takes democracy of the whole country and equality of education as its macroscopical goals, and also has its microcosmic targets which include enabling teachers to master knowleges from different races and groups, having ideas of multicultural teacher education, and seizing multicultual teaching methods. In the curriculum aspects, the author analyze the integration modes and the components of multicultural teacher education curriculum and elaborate the reasons that influence the integration of curriculum. In the didactics filed, author expound the culturally responsive pedagogy which is the primary teaching method in multicultural teacher education, and analyze the characteristics and principles of culturally responsive pedagogy. In the evaluation facet, the author interpret the approval standards of NCATE, and expound the evaluation principles of multicultural teachers. At last, in the guarantee aspect, the author expound the content from two perspectives which are economy and institution.The third part summarizes its achievements and experiences, defects and challenges in the process of the development, and proposes some improvment suggestions, and put forwards its enlightenments to our country. As one of the countries which study the multicultural teacher education much earlier, the USA had a lot of achievements and experiences. Howerver, it also met some problems in the process of development. In the basic of expounding these aspects, the author forcast the orientation which multiculturl teacher education develops in the future, and sumerize the enlighments for our country.
