It has been more than 10 years since 1999 when the new curriculum reform of basic education started in our country. During these years the role of all the teachers including the EFL teachers in the primary school and secondary school has been greatly changing. Under the guidance of the New Curriculum Standard, they try to promote their profession level through adapting and adjusting their roles to meet the requirements the new curriculum standard makes to the teachers. The reform provides an opportunity for teachers, and it is propitious for accelerating teachers'professional development, especially for the in-service teachers, they need to balance the precious education belief and the new education belief the new curriculum reform suggested. Based on the requirement the new curriculum standard makes to the teachers and the theory of teacher's professional development and Fuller,F. & Bown,O.'s teachers'concerns periods, this thesis aims to probe into the status and approach of the middle school EFL teachers'professional development under the pressure of the new curriculum reform. Chapterâ… introduce the background, aims and rationale of the study. In Chapterâ…¡, the definition of the teacher professional development is given, the connotation of the EFL teachers'professional development is made sure. It concludes the education belief of the EFL teachers, the knowledge and ability of the EFL teachers, the professional attitude and motivation of the EFL teachers, the career enthusiasm and pursuit of the EFL teachers. Meanwhile, the author sums up the result related to case study of the EFL teachers and the study of the teachers'professional development approach under the new curriculum context, introduces Fuller,F. & Bown,O.'s teachers'concerns periods theory and the requirements of middle school EFL teachers'professional development suggested in the new curriculum reform. In Chapterâ…¢,the author introduces the content of the study , the objects of the study, the method and approach this study adopted. This study adopted the methods of questionnaire, observation and interview to research two of the middle school EFL teachers. In Chapterâ…£, the author discussed and analyzed the data collected from the two object of study from four aspects: the education belief of the EFL teachers, the knowledge and ability of the EFL teachers, the professional attitude and motivation of the EFL teachers, the career enthusiasm and pursuit of the EFL teachers, finding that the main approaches to develop their professions are: self-rethinking, cooperation between peers, training and the internet. Meanwhile, the form and content of training hoped by the teachers are found. In Chapterâ…¤, according to the result got through the analysis of data, the author puts forward some suggestions to accelerate the EFL teachers'professional development. And Chapterâ…¥is a conclusion of the whole thesis.
