For a long time the choice between subjectivity and objectivity for the patterns of essay reading comprehension in the College Entrance Examination has been caught in a dilemma, which seriously affects teaching, learning and testing. This paper elaborates and investigates subjective, objective and restrictive examination patterns through the aspects of the past and the present, concepts and principles. comments from the critic as well as the successful examples in the domestic and foreign testing systems. It compares the advantages and disadvantages of different examination patterns and substantiates the opinion that the subjective examination pattern for essay reading comprehension should be developed to a large extelfl. Subsequently, this paper presents a couple of measures on how to effectively avoid errors and mistakes in evaluating scores for subjective examination. Moreover, through investigations and experiments, this paper explores the restructuring on selection of essays, design of questions and answers, and methods of evaluation.
