Abstract The modernization is the main theme of Chinese modern society. Centered on it, China is to be transformed from the traditional society to the modem. The transformation course is long and tortuous, however, it raises the curtain on the history of early modernization of China. Being an organic part of the society, family education has to be faced up with painful choices in this course. Based on die study of the history of ancient family education, this thesis analyses the progress of modern transformation of family education and tried to obtain some enlightenment, which are instructive to the contemporary family education of China in combination with the reality of Chinese modern society. The first part of the thesis introduces the background of the research on the history of Chinese family education, analyses the characteristics and problems of the search, points out that the study of the history of modem family education is a vulnerable spot of the research on the history of Chinese family education, demonstrates the theoretical and realistic meanings of Ibis study, and explains some theoretical problems of this study, such as the purpose, the nature, the object, the contents and methods of the study~ Based on the historical research of ancient family education, the thesis presents the four developing stages of ancient family education of China by reviewing the history of ancient family education and combing the materials of the history of ancient family education. By doing that, the author points out that the ancient family education plays an important role in the development of the family, clan, country, and societyinthefuture. Itsvalueistoteachpeoplehowtobe,howtobnnghonorto their ancestors, and how to hand down the family tradition of farming and reading. Its main content is to teach people to recuperate themselves, to regulate their families, to govern their country , to keep their society peaceful and to know . The main II principle and method is to emphasize on the early education, the combination affection with education, the teaching by personal example as well as verbal and the enlightenment ait Connected together, the above mentioned three aspects has constituted the ethical essence of ancient family education. The author expounds the modem transformation of family education through studying the history of ancient family education. Modem China is changed greatly, and with the changing of social political, economic and cultural structure, the modern family education also changes much. In a word, the bictory of transformation of modem family education has gone through the following stages, such as reticent stage, beginning stage, developing stage and mature stage. In every stages, the intnxluction and assimilation of the thoughts of infants education and family education is connected to the development of the thoughts of traditional family education and in this connection there exists not only cntical inheritances, but also innovations based on the combination. The modern family education, compared with ancient family education, has paid more attention to the training of sound personality in its pm-poses, the combination of morality, wisdom, physical culture and aesthetics in its contents and the theories of educational science and the characteristics of infant psychology in its principles and methods.
