| Since the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, the government has begun to actively advocate the promoting of physical training and the strengthening of people's constitution. Directed by this principle and promoted by the government departments of various levels, the basketball activity, owing to its convenient, delightful, invigorative as well as instructional functions, has been warmly welcomed by schools, armed forces, factories, mines, enterprises and mass organizations and has become an increasingly popular game in China. A systematic study of the history of its development will surely enable us to deepen our study of the Mass Basketball in China, summing up the experience and lessons, and exploring the regular patterns of its development so as to facilitate the sustainable development of the Basketball in China. Up till now, quite a few experts and scholars have made lots of relevant investigations in one way or another. However, no one has yet concentrated on the systematic study of the history of its development. In this case, the writer started with his pilot study from the historical and scientific standpoint by means of data collection, interview, case study and questionnaire, focusing on the division of the developmental history, the process of its administrative setup, the process of the establishment of its facilitation, the forms of activities, the motives of participation and its interactive relationship withsociety, politics, economics, athletic basketball, Physical Education in schools.
