Postgraduate education is the highest stage of the regular education system. Its aim is to train people to become creator , disseminator and user of the high-level new knowledge. Through the development from its founding up to now, American postgraduate educat-ion has built up a complete set of first-class quality postgraduate educati-on system. In addition, guided by the core education idea, i.e. human-centered idea, it shows unique features of flexibility, open-mindedness and individuality, and becomes the model for different countries throughout the world. On the basis of analysis of the human-centered idea implied in American postgraduate education, this thesis expounds the ideological foundation of the idea from the aspects of culturology, philosophy and psychology. Its purpose is to explore an approach for the innovation and development of Chinese postgraduate education.The author first defines the core conceptions of human-centered idea and human-centered education. And on the basis of a brief introduction of the general situation of American postgraduate education, the author makes an exhaustive analysis of the profound influence of the human-centered idea on American postgraduate education.Then according to the relations between theory and practice and between culture and education, the author traces the human-centered idea to its ideological origin from the angles of culturology, philosophy and psychology.In the final part of the thesis, through the study of Americanpostgraduate education, the author goes further to review the Chinesepostgraduate education and makes a positive attempt to find out anapproach for the future development of Chinese postgraduate education .
