Recently, the education circles attach more and more importance to autonomous learning, and thus it becomes an overwhelming focus both at home and abroad, even though it is hard to find a exact definition for it. Autonomous learning discussed in the paper is just to create a free circumstance for studying in school education, which will satisfy various learners, and thus evoke them to study voluntarily.According to modern psychology, autonomous learning, to a large extent, depends on the development of self-consciousness. Scientific research shows that a primary school student in Grade Three can begin to develop this ability in a certain aspect, and for junior middle school students, this ability should be promoted in all aspects. But for Chinese Senior Middle School students, the ability is still on a low level, and varies for different students. Their abilities to take notes, draft outlines and make full use of text books are still very poor, therefore it is practical to put autonomous learning into use.This research is based on a contrastive experiment between two classes of XianLin senior middle school in Hua county, which almost have the same level in their learning. In the experiment, great attention is paid to their learning of the seventh chapter, "Creature and Circumstance", of their only one volume textbook, the first edition of October, 1990, published by the people's education publishing house. By the methods of contrast and comparation, based on the study of domestic and abroad autonomous learning theory, according to the basic principle: "being democratic and harmonious, autonomous joining, cooperative learning, to grasp learning ability", autonomous learning model is constructed for the teaching of middle school biology. The model changes the traditional procedure, "teaching before the students' learning" to " the students' learning before teaching". Namely, at first, let the students learn the knowledge at their rang of ability, then the teacher give some guidance and help. The five basic steps of the model are evoking the initiative, learning by oneself, groupcooperation, class teaching, reflection and evaluation, great success has been got in using the model practically. In detail: (1)the students' interest and initiative in learning have been greatly promoted; (2)they come to form a good learning habit, and grasp some learning methods of biology (3)the quality of learning in class has been greatly improved .(4)the students come to form pluralistic evaluations about themselves, (5)their scores get much higher, the author comes to the conclusion that autonomous learning model has the following advantages over traditional ones: Making the students active ones in teaching and learning activities Helping the students to develop excellent autonomous learning habits Helping the students to mold perfect characteristics and personalities Making the students the master of learningThe creative point of this research is that an autonomous learning model which is practical and suits to the quality-oriented education in senior middle school biological classes is introduced. Thus makes the autonomous learning theory practical, in senior middle school biological classes is introduced. Thus makes the autonomous learning theory practical in senior middle school biological teaching.
