The teaching of reading is supposed to be the most important task in Chinese language teaching . Yet it has long been a difficult problem to improve its quality and efficiency.The subject of this paper is put forward on the basis of the theories of modern pedagogy and psychology and a teaching experiment has been conducted in line with the distinctive features of Chinese teaching methods . This paper focuses on the changes of students' reading approach and is aimed at developing their reading skills and habits which is essential to their "life-long education " .This paper analyses the important respects of the basic theoretical framework . such as "the composing elements of independent reading " . "hierarchical structure of independent reading " and "effective strategies of teaching and learning " which are the foundation of teaching practice in developing the ability of independent reading .The teaching process is divided into three stages. "teaching-helping-releasing " for the purpose of motivating students' initiative to participate in classroom activities . The teacher plays a leading role in taking theteaching steps of "preview-perception-problem solving-detailexplanation-practice " in the three periods of "before class-during class-after class " .After the experiment for a semester , the students have made all-round progress .With the development of reading ability and conscientious self-study , there has been a dramatic improvement of the students ' performance . The change of their study strategies leads to a great change of their emotion and attitude towards independent reading :they become more interested and confident and adapt themselves to a good reading habit.The research analysis indicates that the development of independent reading ability is one of the feasible and effective ways of improving reading efficiency of Chinese language teaching at Junior middle schools .
