Reading is a basic skill required for everyone living in the modern society.Year 3 to 6 is a critical stage for children to form and develop human language competency as well as form reading capability.Children who are under this stage are able to develop great interest in reading so they will benefit from cultivating favorable reading habits.In October 2012,Ministry of Education published <Year 3-Year 6 Children Learning and Development Guide>.According to the publication,the languagerelated introduction highlights that it is necessary to provide enriched and appropriate reading materials for young children and it suggests to read and tell the story with children so interests and reading habits can be formed,which in turn,train their language expression and expand their learning experience.As can be seen,Ministry of Education has set reading and cultivation of reading competency as the target of kindergarten education.Motivating self-reading interest and cultivating self-reading habit and capability is to facilitate the language development for future school learning.It will have long-term positive impact on forming lifetime learning ability and can be seen as a potential sustainable development.However,there are several problems existing in children reading.First of all,the goal of children reading is not clear yet.Random reading is often the case.Secondly,inferior reading ability will result in insufficient observation,analysis and understanding of the material.Thirdly,the questions asked by children are insufficient as their cognition and analysis towards the reading materials are still under developed.They are often stuck with the role of stating and replying instead of understanding.They haven't form their own thoughts in terms of the way and pattern of asking questions.Therefore,we pointed the topic-Whole Language Education Theory Guided Research to Develop Children Active Reading Ability-to carry out children learning in early stage.The goal is to facilitate reading habit during the practice of watching,listening,thinking,asking and speaking.Finally,they are able to develop initial active reading ability as their lifetime benefit.This research starts from the definition of whole language and review,ummarize and organize the views of domestic and international scholars.Pros and cons analysis is examined regarding current children reading situation and prepares for the implementation of Whole Language theory.This research contains following four parts.First,to set the goal of Whole Language for improving children's thinking skills so they can construct complete small stories;improving language expression ability so they can deliver small stories;improving distinguish ability so they can tell the different phenomena such as beauty,kindness,fake,wickedness;improving children's interpersonal skills so they can cooperate with each other effectively;improving the study interest to enhance self-discovery.It allows children to enter a complete real life and develop under appropriate environment.Secondly,this research states three principles of children reading.First,it is the combination of listening,speaking,reading and writing.It includes: creating environment,applying suitable rooms;multiple balanced topics;home interaction and reading among family;various reading scheme and orderly organization.Secondly,it focuses on breakthrough of listening,speaking,reading and writing so all possible approaches can be applied into learning.The Third one is context principle where it uses online source to create real life content and form static reading and active reading to enhance the children reading interest and facilitate reading development.Thirdly,numerous examples have proved the effects of children self-reading including children self-assessment,teacher-assessment and parent's evaluation.Children self-assessment is based on communicating with children and analysis taking into account the aspects of interest,competency,value and emotion.Teacher's assessments use examples such as children case study,language recording,children growth profile.All data is recorded via Excel platform to show the evaluation result.Parent's evaluation is based on statistical analysis of survey.Fourthly,the conclusion drawn from this research includes: environment creation is the foundation and course revaluation is the core while teacher training program is the support and family corporation is the direction.Furthermore,parents paid more attention to updating the change of their original thoughts,the operation of this technique in a more scientific way and self-growth as parents.By connecting with parents,children reading capability can be promoted to a much higher level.However,there are still drawbacks of this research and improvement shall be implemented.For example,the target group was year 3 to year 6 children which includes the children in different class ranking in kindergarten.There must be deviations for one specific age group.Therefore it is suggested to study the mental and physical traits of sub-group among these children and more detailed research is necessary for future improvement.Secondly,research improvement requires extended evidence and data from wider reference shall be obtained to strengthen its representational reliability.
