On The Fusion Of Scientism Culture And Humanism Culture

Since the 20th century, especially, with the fast development of science, science has made great victory at the quest of various fields, which in turn has attached more importance to scientism culture and sci-tech rationality than ever before, and provided theonly means to evaluate the object word, particularly the human society in the perspective of scientism culture.However, the abuse of science and technology together with the neglect of humanism culture has resulted in many world problems, such as, environment, resource, war and so on.Under market economy, overemphasis on sci-tech and neglect of humanism have led to the loss of self and ruin of spirit, and thus human being became the slave of machines, the slave of money and the slave of desires, no morals and a mere emotionless animal. And consequently this caused the conflict between scientism culture and humanism culture. Many scholars, domestic and foreign alike, have studied this conflict in various perspectives, focusing on the antimony and unity. Post modernism first ,in the form of criticizing and even denying of sci-tech, urged a call for humanistic care. Current social practices require a proper fusion of scientism and humanism to promote human civilization together. Therefore,further study on their immanent relationship and fusing means is of vital importance in theory and practice.The current paper believe that scientism culture and humanism culture, two important parts of the whole human culture, are of born unity.From 17th century to the later half of 19th century, due to the application of sci-tech based capitalism and the growing emphasis on tool rationality as well as other reasons, scientism culture and humanism culture are gradually divided. Most scientists and philosophers then held that all the problems can be solved by science sooner 01 later, and they had a blind worship for science. Sine the later half of the 19th century, the emerging of positivism and scientism as well as the criticism from the later humanism have developed the two opposing camps, scientism and humanism. The conflicts between the two had great influence to China's academy world, and the debate over "science and philosophy" in the 20s of the 20th century and the debate on "science and humanistic spirit" were two examples. Thus the debates sharpened the antimony between the scientism culture and humanism culture. Andtheir bad consequences to the society have shown that complete development of human and the society require the reunification of the two cultures. Through a historical survey of the relationship between the two cultures, and on the shoulders of domestic and foreign scholars, the current paper attempts to probe the immanent relationship of the two and the inevitability of and practical perspectives. The paper is also in the hope that it can promote the fusing of scientism and humanism and the fusing of science education and humanistic education. Thirdly, the paper is trying to discover a value choice for social development: a rational, practical and innovational science and a humanistic purpose guided true, kind and esthetical development.
