With the progressive advancement of the new reforms of basic education curriculum in China, the development of chemistry textbook according to the Chemistry Curriculum Standard of the Full Compulsory Education have become an important content of the chemistry curriculum reforms. In order to give significant resource and guide students to learn by inquiry, develop their inquiry ability, it has been focused attention upon how to show the characteristic of science inquiry in the textbook. These are also the main contents that we are studying now.The thesis consists of six parts. In part I , firstly, it shows clearly the demand of textbook development in the new reforms of basic education curriculum and analyzes positioning of science inquiry in the national curriculum standard. Secondly, it reviews the history and analyzes the actuality of the chemistry textbook development for middle school. In addition, we put forward the purposes and tasks of the research. In part n , the basic theoretic research is carried out detailedly in terms of constructivism theory and the basic theory of science inquiry. Firstly, we bring forward the learning style of science inquiry that is advocated by the constructivism. Secondly, we tell the difference between science inquiry and inquiry learning, and analyze the students' inner factors that affect them.In part ffl, we analyze the theory of textbook development. We expatiate the idealistic turning of textbook and the principle of textbook development. We offer a basic model of textbook development with reference to some objectives models of curriculum development. That is to say, in the first place, the guiding idea of textbook development and the goal we can achieve should be defined. In the second place, the contents that are designed should be chosen. At last, the contents should be organized and designed in the textbook. In part IV, we analyze some textbooks we can get. Firstly, we emphasize on analyzing the inquiry activities in the textbook LIFE & SCIENCE which was published by the Oxford University Publishing House.Secondly, we analyze the contents of Purifying of Drinking Water in terms of the knowledge-arranging, the activity-designing and the layout. In part V , the core contents are mentioned .We bring forward some opinion and expatiate on four aspects. They are the goal of the science inquiry designing, selection of the inquiry activities' contents, designing of the inquiry activities, and up-setting of learning context in chemistry textbook. The thesis considers that students must experience rich and colorful inquiry activities in order to fulfill not only the learning goal for science inquiry as curricular content, but also the cultivating goal as learning style. Selecting the contents of inquiry activities is equal to estimating if the contents are worth inquiring. The principles of selecting include five aspects: first, it should own clear goal of inquiry; second, it should be connected with students' experience; third, it should accord with students' cognitive level; fourth, it should excite students' motivation and interest of learning; at last, the inquiry activities should be operated. We classify the inquiry activities* into four types which are inquiring the factual, theoretical, methodological and STS knowledge respectively according to the characteristic of chemistry subject and knowledge.Inquiry activities can lead students to learn by means of inquiry. We separate the design based on science inquiry in the textbook into several phases in which the students find the problems, collect and analyze the data, draw the conclusion and then apply it .All the steps and methods of science inquiry lie in these phases, where we can also design various inquiry activities.Firstly, we should design the textbook starting with students' existing experience in the phase of how to find the problems. We can lead students to extract the knowledge of their own by setting up problem context in the textbook.Secondly, we should design multiform activitie...
