A Study On The Traditional Patriarchal Culture Of The Uyghur Nationality

The patriarchal system is a kind of family system and clan system not only characterized by clan authority and patriarchy, but also containing class antagonism as well. As a special social phenomenon, it has been on for several thousand years, which effected social development deeply and enormously.In the recent twenty to thirty years, the domestic scholars began to study the patriarchal system, but there is a disputation about them. Some scholars suggested that combine the basic theories on patriarch of Marxism-Leninism with the reality of China, which would be the best way to study the patriarchal system. Some people insisted on the traditional feudal theories, others were in favor of the theories of anthropology and sociology, which came from the western countries. I think the ideology of Marxism-Leninism-Mao Zedong Thought is the scientific truth in the patriarchal study. The theories of anthropology and sociology also offer a new way to study the patriarch. This thesis combines the basic theories of Marxist-Leninist and historical viewpoints with the anthropological and sociological theories to analyze the documental records and various statistics data about Uyghur nationality, and compares which with the patriarchal culture of other nationalities, through which I want to reveal the basic characteristics, the causes, the social influence and the contemporary reforms of the Uyghur nationality's patriarchal culture.The Uyghur nationality is a Chinese minority with a long history. From ancient times, the Uyghur nationality went through two periods of nomadic and farming. Thetraditional culture of the Uyghur nationality takes on the patriarchal nature with nomadic nationality and farming nationality. The Uyghur nationality has been in Xin Jiang, the northwestern region of China, for a very long time. The central Plains Dynasties, such as Han and Tang Dynasty, tried to develop his territory and opened the Silk Road. Other central Plains Dynasties, such as Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasty, had ever ruled and managed the area. So this area became the region where the Western culture and the Eastern culture were most actively exchanging and fusing. The Islamic culture and the Confucianism influenced the Uyghur nationality very much. The special background formed the special traditional patriarchal culture of Uyghur. The beginning of this thesis, namely the first part, outlined the origin and development in the history of the Uyghur nationality with abundant datum, which help understand the different forms and features of the Uyghur nationality's patriarchal culture in periods. The second part of this thesis elaborates the different forms of the Uyghur nationality's traditional patriarchal culture emphatically, including social organizational institutes, family and marriage structures, inheritance system and funeral custom. The Uyghur nationality underwent two times, the patriarchal slavery system and the patriarchal feudal system. Many things had influenced the formation of the Uyghur nationality's traditional patriarchal culture.The third part of this thesis further inquires into the emerging causes and features of the Uyghur nationality's traditional patriarchal culture. I believe that there are many major causes, such as economic factor, natural environmental factor, religious factor, cultural factor and so on. Besides, these causes also result in the compound feature of the Uyghur nationality's culture.The fourth of this thesis analyzes and explains the contemporary inheritance and changes of the Uyghur nationality's traditional patriarchal culture. In the modern society, how to criticize and inherit the traditional patriarchal culture and how to develop a relatively comfortable life of the Uyghur nationality, are very important questions.
