This thesis focuses on the application of brainstorming in teaching speaking. Speaking is the main component of the overall capacity for English learners. Therefore, in the development of English teaching methods great importance has been attached to fostering the learners' speaking ability in the past few decades. Consequently, various teaching approaches have been developed and widely used in teaching speaking, and they have already taken certain effect.The traditional methods in teaching speaking are unfavourable to improving the students' communicative competence due to their drawbacks. Although the modern methods in teaching speaking are characterized by giving full play to the exchanges of information, stimulating interaction between teachers and students and motivating students' initiative to speak English, yet students still do not speak English on their own initiative as the result of the psychological reasons caused by the deep-rooted traditional culture.By discussing the drawbacks of the traditional methods, the advantages and disadvantages of the modern ones and the possibility of applying brainstorming in both methods, the author concluded that the application of brainstorming can be a remedy for the shortcomings of traditional and modern methods for teaching spoken English and will result in the improvement of students' communicative competence.
