With the development of computer and Internet, CAI attracts more and more recognition and flying development as a novel way of educating in these years. Therefore, it is becoming much prospective. This paper mainly reports our initiative research on the three-dimensional animation, one media used for CAI. We completely instigated the methods for developing three-dimensional animation in detail. The CAI software we developed was applied to the course Mechanical Design successfully, which emphasize the important content in the subject as well as solves some difficulties in educating.The first chapter introduced the history and trend on developing CAI. It also confirms the importance and priority of our research on CAI based on multimedia, which plays an essential role in the current instruction. The paper discusses the education theory and instruction style in the course of CAI development and elaborates the advantages of CAI in the course Mechanical Design by reviewing the fundamental and current situation.The second chapter, from many points of view we study the theory of CAI, elucidated five elementary modules in a complete computer animation system, and established relevantly process. The paper recommends some usual softwares for making a three-dimensional animation. By comparing them in three aspects , building 3D models, functional animation and drawing, we elaborated their characteristic individually.The third chapter proposed three ways in making three-dimensional animation based on collecting all databases, which are the key of developing CAI software. The author built the animations of belt drive and chain drive independently using 3DS MAX and Solidworks. At the same time, a general machine and moving of balls were animated by some program languages.The forth chapter covers the implement methods of CAI software. Basing on the module design, we innovated the new idea that the design is divided into two parts, i.e.,system program design and instruction content display. The CAI software we developed was used in the course Mechanical Design. It realizes the dream of computer-assisted instruction in Mechanical design through meeting the instruction requirement, the structure arrangement and the design of instruction materials.In the fifth chapter, the paper is concluded with some conclusions, the future work in the study of CAI and points out some deficiency and orientation in the future work of research on three-dimensional animation in CAI.
