The general strategy of city development of Shanghai has defined the functions of building Chongming into an ecological island, and how the island should be developed. In response to the rapid development of an ecological island, we should lay stress on the great importance of green education in middle schools, primary schools and kindergartens, and to maximize teachers' dominant role in green education. We need to gain the support of communities and pave the way for their participation. We also need to train and bring up qualified personnel who can meet the requirements of social development. To promote green education is a historical task for the education cause in Chongming. Sustainable development has been a world-wide concept, therefore, green education has become not only a domestic theme but an international one as well.Through group questionnaires, individual interviews and individual case study, this article is aimed at finding out the present situations of green education among the three groups: teachers, students and communities; getting the statistics in the three aspects of cognition, affection and skill among the three groups; and putting forward some suggestions so as to provide basis for carrying out the green education in a planned, organized and regional way in the future.From group questionnaires and individual interview, we found that there exists deficiency to some extent in the three aspects among the three groups. First, the lack of understanding of green education or inadequate knowledge about it has led to an overall inadequate cognition of green education among teachers, students and community residents. Second, little success experience in carrying out green education has resulted in inadequate affection among teachers. And last, the lack of training of all fields has led to technical incompetence among teachers, students and community residents. Therefore, we have beenseeking to find out the solutions to these problems stated above, in order that the green education will be carried out more purposefully and more effectively. From individual case study, we found that schools which started green education earlier had had some experience, which would provide other schools with study cases that would benefit the regional promotion of green education.
