Humanism is the trend of thought that stemmed from the Renaissance in Europe. Based on the affirmation and respect of man, it probes into man's nature, mission, status, value and personal ity development. And fostering that spirits is exactly the main goal of history education in middle school. With the market economy in our country, the pragmatistic ideas have a strong impact on the traditional teaching ideas. The humanistic function of history education has long been neglected. But the new round of course reformation attaches great importance on fostering humanistic spirits, not only in teaching goal and method but also in teaching process. At the same time many countries are also adjusting their teaching goal to humanistic spirits too, and it becomes one of the hot spots in the worldwide education reform. This paper expounds how to foster the humanistic spirits through history teaching in middle school, especially in the aspects of improving the teachers' qualities, appreciating humanistic meaning of the teaching materials, encouraging students to take part in the course discussion on their own initiative, and counting in the transfer of attitude value in student evaluation.
