Poetry teaching is an important part of Chinese teaching in senior middle school, since any literature has the character of poetry. Therefore, students' ability to appreciate poetry is indeed essential to the success of Chinese teaching.In order to find out how senior middle school students' poetry reading stands, I made paper inquiries separately about poetry reading among Grade One and Grade Three students in a key senior middle school and an ordinary senior middle school. But the results are worrying :most senior middle school students show their indifference towards poetry, and their level of poetry understanding and appreciating are not satisfactory. What's more surprising, students in Grade One and in Grade Three are almost equal in ability to understand poetry. Thus, there are reasons to believe that is of great nicety for us to improve our poetry teaching. At the same time, let's trace its sources. We can see that the traditional burden to students, poetry education system and inappropriate methodology are to blame. Consequently, this essay makes clear again the purpose of poetry teaching according to the characteristics of poetry and students' aesthetic psychology and specific teaching strategies for improving poetry teaching methodologies.
