Based on the review of the development of class teaching, and the analysis of the emerging background, past and present studies of smaller class teaching, this thesis argues that smaller class teaching is derived from class teaching and aimed to keep the strong points of traditional class teaching on the one hand and to overcome the weak points on the other. It also believes that the present studies of smaller class teaching, at home and abroad, are not comprehensive by only cutting the class size or just taking some other isolated strategies to study the smaller class teaching and to analyze its efficient and effect. Therefore the studies themselves as well as its results have somewhat weakness. By adopting the perspective of system and its approaches, this thesis focuses on the reform of smaller class teaching in order to exert its advantages. Under the guidance of the system approaches, this thesis firstly explains the basic concept of smaller class teaching from three folds: small class, small class teaching, smaller class teaching. Then it analyses the main features of the teachers, the students, the objectives, the contents, the methods, the context, the management, and the assessment of smaller class teaching. Besides it focuses on the optimization of the main elements above mentioned in smaller class teaching, namely, the optimization of human relation system, the optimization of teaching resources system, the optimization of teaching objectives system, the optimization of teaching management system, the optimization of teaching strategies system, and the optimization of teaching assessment system. Herein the optimization of human relation system includes the one between teacher and teacher, between teacher and student, between student and student; the optimization of teaching resources system focuses on the optimized combination of teaching staff, and tangible teaching facilities and the efficient use of intangible facilities; the optimization of teaching objectives system stresses that the general objective is designed for comprehensive competence of students and the specific teaching aims are designed for different level students; the optimization of teaching strategies system consists of the comprehensive use of teaching organizational forms, the rigorous choice of teaching methods, and the practical and creative teaching techniques; the optimization of teaching management system includes the smoothness of management information among all teaching staff, the wholeness coordination of all aspects, and the dynamic correlation in the whole management process; the optimization of teaching assessment system includes multi-projects in assessment contents, the personalities stratification of assessment standard, and the flexibility and diversity of assessment methods.Based on the above analysis, this thesis summarizes the main functional advantages of the smaller class teaching. They are developing the students' individual dignity, developing the students' specialities and personalities, developing the students' creative potential, fostering the students' practical competence and their social intercourse competence, etc.At last, it is about my reflections on the above study in order to form a kind of rational approach to various phenomena in future teaching reform.
