Improving Senior Students' English Writing By Integrating Reading With Writing

Writing is an extremely complex intellectual process. The process involves the recursive application of wide range of thinking skills and language abilities. Writing can effectively promote knowledge's digestion of the target languages. It is helpful for learners to verify the sentence structure and words using of the aim language, and can promote the automation of the target language's using so as to effectively accelerate the acquisition of the aim language. In China, writing is always a weak aspect of English teaching. Although our scholars and many English teachers racked their brains in it, the effect is still not obvious and the students' writing has never reached the satisfactory result.The present thesis, whose theoretical bases was Krashen's Comprehensible Input Hypothesis and Swain's Comprehensible Output Hypothesis, studied and summarized the newest study achievements about the English writing teaching for years at home and abroad, combining the present situation of middle school English writing and boldly advanced the WAIRW. Namely, in teaching of reading, the English teachers should emphatically strengthen the input of the words and phrases, and try to make students relaxedly and happily read. In the course of teaching writing, English teachers should regard imitating of the model article as the focal point of train, meanwhile, combine the peer-valuation with the reading and appraising of teachers, and adopt encouragement measures for stimulating the writing interest so as to finally promote students' English writing level.In order to verify the effect of this approach, the author carried out the experiment study in two second grade classes of Bailing Senior Middle School. One was established to be the Experimental Class and adopted the WAIRW to carry out writing teaching; the other was established to be the Control Class and adopted the TA to carry out writing teaching.The experiment result showed that the English writing scores of the students from the Experimental Class improved more obviously than from the Control Class, and the girl students' scores were improved more quickly than the boy students because of adopting the new writing teaching approach.Then, the result of the experiment was summarized and analyzed from the words spelling, collocation, grammar, sentence construction and coherent etc. Generally speaking,students from the Experimental Class made more obvious progress in the collocation, grammar and sentence pattern than in other field. About the accuracy of the language using, the variety of the vocabulary using, and about the coherent, the students from the Experimental Class were all far better than the Control Class.Finally, the discussion on the experimental result was carried out, and the implications on the English writing teaching from the discussion included the following points.First, the amount of reading directly affects the level of English writing. In the normal teaching of reading, the English teachers should help their students to grasp some reading methods and know some basic factors and characteristics of reading so as to increase their reading speed. Meanwhile, teachers should encourage their students to form the good habit of reading, and fully utilize their limited time to increase the amount of reading as much as possible.Second, the vocabulary is the foundation of writing a piece of excellent writing. Therefore, when choosing reading materials, we should pay attention to associating them with the vocabularies of cassroom teaching, and choose the vocabularies related. Based on the conceptual meaning of the vocabularies, we should extend its other meaning of the words, such as affective meaning, associative meaning, collocative meaning, etc. And based on the existing vocabularies, we should enlarge their synonyms and antonyms.
