The reform and open policy has made the educational circles see there are many advantages in our traditional maths teaching , Such as taking the teaching of elementary knowledge Seriously ,basic skill practice , maths calculating , reasoning from analogy and space imaginatiom . However , we still have some shortcomings . Two problems are much more obvious , one is that the students don't have strong sense of the application of maths . The other is that they are weak in creation . The students can't often connect the practical problems with abstract maths problems . Neither can they solve practical problems with the maths knowledge that they've learned . They know a little about the autual background of the maths knowledge that they've studied . They just imitate mechanically some maths problems that are often met with . And they can do well in solving these problems while they have few ways to solve a new problem . They are weak in finding and solving a problem , such as observing , analyzing , Summing up , analogizing , abstracting , Summarizing and guessing and they don't have many scientifical modes of thinking . Bringing forth new modes in maths teaching is the only way to overconce the abuse in traditional maths teaching . And it is the key step of educational reform and concrete manifestation .Problem solving in maths is one of the hottest discussions in international maths teaching research since 1980s , as a new kind of educatioual thought and idea , It means a new kind of teaching styles , problem solving has been regarded as the core of maths teaching in schools in America , England and Japan one after another in recent years . This idea does not only emphasize analying problems , sdving problems in the whole period but also emphasize that the students should probe actively . It stresses that maths teaching is a teaching of thinking . Great attention must be paid to teaching students how to think, to encouraging students to try probing actively and initiatively and gain large amount of and all kinds of experience . Try to improve the students'ability to analyze problems . and solve problems . Develop their spirits in probing and co -operating . Thus , students know how to study and how to create . Therefore, problem solving teaching resolve the contradiction between our traditional maths teaching and students' not having strong appli calion of maths and poor creating ability . In our traditional maths teaching , double basic education is paid much attention . So we can say problem solving teaching is necessary to develop open-minded and creative students and it is necessary to take quality education.Problem solving teaching also reflects Ihe purpose that maths teaching should face all students .The theory bases of maths problem solving are : First , examine it from the angle of psychology of study , problem solving is understood as a process of learning and operating or a process of psychological motion . Second , Psychologists of learning think there are two basic types of problem solving . one is need to yield a new process which belongs to creative problem solving ; the other is apply the known or available programme which is very common in problem solving . problem solving in maths usually belongs to creative problem solving .
