In Freedom and Beyond John Holt says: "People, even children, are educated much more by the whole society around them and the general quality of life in it than they are by what happens in school. The dream of many school people, that schools can be places where virtue is preserved and passed on in a world otherwise empty of it, now seems to me a sad and dangerous illusion. It might have worked in the Middle Ages; it can't work in a world of cars, jets, TV, and the mass media." As practicers of John Holt's ideas about school and education, the group of parents who choose to raise and educate their children at home and without school is expanding in the U.S.The first two chapters will tell you how these parents and their kids —the so-called home-schoolers are doing — their struggle, their achievements, and the challenges they are confronted with. Chapter three concentrates on the two main disputes about home-schooling — Should home-schools be more regulated? Should public schools provide more supporting services for home-school families? For a comparative study, the last chapter is about the home-school situation in China. A few cases are demonstrated to summarize the current features and future trends of home-schools in China.
