Classroom observation is a fundamental tool in middle school teaching-learning management. The observers can be different, and the aims may be different. As we know, the observers of classroom observation include three groups of members in school, i.e. supervisors or administrators, school researchers and teachers. The aims of supervisors or administrators mainly focus on inspecting, commentary, evaluating and suggestions. The school researchers hope to stimulate the teacher to think critically and, thereby, to broaden the scope of what s/he will consider doing in that classroom situation, to adapt to the developing and changeable teaching and learning situation. For teachers in middle school, classroom observation can help them improve their teaching ability, provide a basis for in-service training and development, promote teachers' further education.Since the 1980s, classroom observation has been used as a basic and useful approach in middle school teaching-learning management. We have achieved much experience. It has been playing an important part in our teaching-learning management. However, with the development of the reform of our new curriculums, classroom observation needs further researching and analyzing.In the first part, I give the definition of classroom observation in middle school teaching-learning management, and make an outline of the research about classroom observation inside our country and abroad.In the second part, I arrange data of the investigations, which are about the attitude of the supervisors or administrators, teachers and students to classroom observation. I also sum up the current problems found in the investigations.In part three, I analyze the theories of classroom observation. First I reflect the nowadays situation of classroom observation by middle school headmasters. Then I analyze the requirement to the classroom observation by the new curriculums. After that, I make a research on the necessity of headmasters' classroom observation.In the last part, I give some advice on how to observe teaching and learning in the classroom, according to the first three parts of my thesis.
