Formative evaluation is also called process evaluation. It refers to the evaluation of amending the revolving track in order to achieve a better efficiency in the process of educational activity, it is an important part of curriculum evaluation, and also a key assurance of carrying out the educational activity and objective successfully. Formative evaluation, a new-type one, has a short history, but it develops rapidly. Many nations are putting more and more focus on the research of formative evaluation owing to its positive role in educational activity. The research of formative evaluation in China can only date back to the middle of the 1980s and much literature was brought in from abroad. There is no ready-made model of formative evaluation inside and outside China, so we are just in the stage of probe and research. In 2003 the Ministry of Education of the PRC promulgated The National English Curriculum Standards for Senior High School (NECS for short) , the NECS stipulates that the English curriculum evaluation should be the integration of formative evaluation and summative evaluation, namely, we should concern ourselves with the outcome and the process as well, with the formative one as the main one , and also the integration of quantitative evaluation and qualitativeevaluation, with the latter one as the main one. But in reality there exist many problems in curriculum evaluation in China, for instance, the unitary evaluation function and measure and the quantitative evaluation criteria , etc. This paper has made some analyses of the existing problems in the practical curriculum evaluation in English for senior high school and also researched the formative evaluation thoroughly under the background of the reformation of English curriculum evaluation, which is initiated in the NECS for senior high school.Chapter One introduces the background of English curriculum reformation for senior high school and its significance, then discusses the concept of curriculum evaluation and its target. Besides, the purpose of the study and the main frame of this paper are presented in this chapter.Chapter Two focuses on the deep understanding of mixed value of English curriculum evaluation and the facilitating of mixed contents, the integration of formative and summative evaluation. Much focus placed on the process of learning, the overall development of students and the broad evaluation of students is the main trend of curriculum evaluation.Chapter Three focuses the evaluation notion and principle of English curriculum. Curriculum evaluation is the weak link of our educational activity in middle schools. The reformation says that the notion of educational evaluation must be thoroughly reformed, otherwise, the requirements raised by the NECS will not be carried out. And the principle of evaluation is the guideline of evaluation. The contents, criteria and methods must be conducted under the guideline.Chapter Four is the core and the focal point of the paper. Firstly, it makes some explanations of the concept and the function of formative evaluation. Secondly, it also expounds the importance and some noticeable points of formative evaluation on students' development in the educational practice. Lastly come the forms, the traits and the methods of formative evaluation models. Some examples of the evaluation models are also designed as a reference following each model.Chapter Five is the concluding part, which summarizes the study and points out that some problems should be noticed in the enrollment for higher education.
