With the further deepening reform of the education in China, the higher vocational technical colleges have been developing very fast, and it is possible for more and more students to have chances to study in higher vocational technical colleges. But there remains a big gap of transition of English teaching and learning from secondary vocational technical school to higher vocational technical college, and the gap becomes larger and larger because of the present systems of education management, different means of evaluation, different demands of band tests and different sources of new students. So, the existing hard transition leaves much to be discussed, and it is quite necessary for us to research on the main existing problems. This thesis, consisting of five main parts, is written for this purpose.At first, we must find some theoretical background in order to solve these existing problems, according to cognitive theory, language teaching has its own characteristics and rules, and there are different teaching stresses in different stages. Every procedure of English teaching should de developed balancedly and transit naturally.To find out solutions, a lot more attention should be paid to the laws of the language itself and English teaching methods. English teaching should be advanced from simple to complex, from easy to difficult. If there exists a gap during the procedure, the gap will surely be widely felt, and it will then seriously influence the effect of teaching and learning.It seems especially important to bridge the gap and make a smoother transition. At present, there are three main obstacles affecting the smooth transition: At first, there lies great difference between the textbooks; Second, there is much difference in the ways of English teaching; Third, different students of different levels have different motivations of learning English.
