The Ancient Olympic Games was held in honour of the god Zeus, founded in 776 BC and reached its zenith in the fifth century BC. But with the conquering of the Macedonians and the Romans, the Ancient Olympic Games gradually disappeared from the scene. People didn't excavate the legacy of the Greek sports until the Renaissance. From modern times on, the Ancient Olympic Games revived under the promoting of some factors. In 1896, the First Modern Olympic Games was held in Athens—the hometown of the Ancient Olympic Games. And now it owns extensive influence throughout the world. The thesis is the result of tentative research on the old athletic meeting.The thesis consists of three parts—the introduction, the text and the conclusion.The introduction briefly introduces the conditon of the Ancient Olympic Games' research and the significance of choosing this topic.The text makes an omnifaceted observance from four aspects. Chapter one mainly discusses the origin, development and declination of the Ancient Olympic Games; Chapter two analyses the fundamental events of the Ancient Olympic Games and its arrangement; Chapter three thoroughly dissects the Ancient Olympic Games' essential features — nudity, religiousness and educativeness; Chapter four expounds the influence of the Ancient Olympic Games from three sides—the relations between the Ancient Olympic Games and the Greek civilization, the connections between the Ancient Olympic Games and the Roman civilization and the relevances between the Ancient Olympic Games and the Modern Olympic Games.In the end, it is concluded that the full informations on the Ancient Olympic Games haven' t been uncovered although great efforts were made. Therefore further research on the Ancient Olympic Games is required.
