College students are at a formative stage where? Their outlook on life and views about value are formed. This is an important time at which they probe into themselves and affirm their selfhood? It is well acknowledged by many psychologists that the failure of a person to develop self-identity during his/her youthhood may result in all kinds of psychologic problems in his/her future development.By way of the case investigation method, this article explains the dangers of underdeveloped self-identity that are posed to college students as well as the society. Furthermore, it analyzes the main factors that affect the establishment of self-identity and the reasons that lead to the failure of self-identity formation, on the basis of which the author points out that positive education and instruction, together with promoting the socializing of the college students and carrying out mental health instruction, is an effective way to help college students develop their ? self-identity. The paper points out in a creative way that establishing self-identity is the central goal of mental health instruction.This paper has identified a key area in college mental health instruction and makes the tasks and goals of college mental instruction clear. Thus, its findings are highly instructive and can easily be applied. However, there is still not enough case study or applied research on the issues concerning self-identity among college students, and this author hopes that this paper can help to attract the domestic education and psychological circles to pay more attention.
