According to the investigation on the situation of chant teaching method applied in the middle-school Chinese teaching in Danyang, it is found that most teachers lay great stress on analysis,scanning and writing rather than chant,or reading aloud. Both teachers and students are busy dealing with exams, so they may often ignore chant, accumulation of Chinese language and cultivation of the feeling for the language, which leads to an unsatisfying teaching effect. In addition, theoretically, there are lots of disputes on the traditional chant teaching method. Some think it is extremely effective one, but others are completely the opposite. However, many Chinese teachers and researchers of Chinese teaching have made great helpful exploration. They indicate that it is of great importance in Chinese teaching and should be emphasized. Meanwhile, the ability of the feeling for words, accumulation of Chinese language, realization and edification are all advocated and emphasized in "the Standard of Compulsory Senior Chinese for China Students" and "Senior Chinese for China Students" issued by National Education Council in 2001. And it is proved that chant is an effective way to help students to get these abilities. Chant is an everlasting and traditional teaching method, and it is helpful in modern middle-school Chinese teaching.Referring to the history and present situation of chant teaching method, its characteristics and functions, its concrete measures and evaluation system, and its requirements of teachers, this paper gives a new view on chant method in Chinese teaching. After taking the new subjects standard and modern educational and psychological theories into consideration, combining others' successful experience with own teaching practice and re-examining the method of traditional Chinese chant teaching closely, the author suggests in the paper that chant must be strengthened in teaching processes. With methods or measures such as documents, experiments, investigation and comparison, it suggests an effective and practical approach to enhancing the efficiency and quality of middle-school Chinese teaching by cultivating students' feeling for words and strengthening chant.
