People with moral integrity should, with senses of self-respect and self-improvement, be both self-dependent and self-confident, and the same is true with future creative talents. Among the qualities, self-confidence is regarded as one of the important motivations and guarantees for people's development and success, for it contributes to the acquisition of abilities and the psychological perception of success and failure. Compared with high self-confidence, low self-confidence works as a kind of confinement that prevent from achieving success. To cultivate the students' self-confidence is of crucial importance for quality-oriented education and mathematics teaching. Vocational education is obviously neglected and students from polytechnic school should be paid much more attention for most of them have been discouraged by setbacks and lack of enough self-confidence.This paper examines effective approaches of cultivating self-confidence of polytechnic school students, the contents being mathematics learning. Research shows the average students are not self-confident in learning mathematics, the most important cause of which is education. Suggestions are put forward, which are based on one-year teaching practice. Correct teaching ideas (like aim-setting, trusting and respecting students) and some teaching methods (like teaching the history of mathematics, emotional teaching, strengthening the felling of success, correct employment of cause-finding and evaluation) are discussed in the paper in order that mathematics teaching in polytechnic school be more interesting and more effective.
