Optional RE. Courses mean: The school decide proper courses according to the school's teaching environment and conditions. Then the students can choose their courses according to their own interests, tastes and foundation. But all these must be under one condition that health is first. Courses carried out in this form are called optional P.E. courses. The optional P.E. courses have been carried out in some colleges and universities in some economically developed big cities and some medium-size cities in the past tens of years. The courses are still being improved and developed by combing the advanced experience of foreign countries with the schools' actual situations. The courses turn out effective and lively. But in the less developed area in the north of Jiangsu province, the conditions of some schools in rural areas are not satisfactory . So whether it is possible to organize teaching in the form of optional P.E. courses remains to be studied. So I decided to make a study of it. However, after a survey to the situation of teachers, the school facilities, the students' attitudes and demands, the money invested in physical education and the social expectations, it has been proved that optional courses are feasible. I drew this conclusion after analyzing information and investigating some schools and some face to face interviews. The result is: The structure of our P.E. teachers is rational and the distribution of majors is also rational. The students show great expectations for the courses which they are good at . Some people in the society also hold affirmative attitudes toward the course. Meanwhile, most of the schools investigated have special money for carrying out sports. This provides an important basis and security for the course. So we decide that it is possible to carry out optional P.E. courses in schools in rural areas atpresent.
