The map is the most visual and imaging teaching media in the geography teaching of high schools, and it has the function that languages and writings can't replace in transmitting geography space information. The development of computers and especially the emergence of the GIS technology have made the application of the map changed completely. The GIS map is being used widely in production and people's life with its more advantages. The GIS has been written into the course system of high schools according to the newly-made The Geography Course Standard of Ordinary Senior High Schools (Experimental). Not only is the GIS infiltrated into the geography education as teaching contents, but also is applied to the geography education as teaching technical means. It is because of its strong functions of map processing and operating that the GIS can be applied to the geography education.With the application of the GIS to the map teaching of high schools as its breakthrough point, by comparing the present research condition of the GIS education in high schools at home and abroad and by analyzing the necessity and feasibility of the application of the GIS to the map teaching, this article has concluded that we initially have the social environment for carrying out the GIS teaching in high schools in our country; through the questionnaire of the uses of the traditional map and the GIS map, and by combining it with teaching practice, this article expounds the education function, the general method and the pathway of the GIS being applied to the geography teaching with lots of teaching cases and has concluded that it is necessary and feasible to apply the GIS to the map teaching of high schools because it has more advantages than the traditional map teaching and can also solve some difficult teaching problems difficult to deal with by traditional maps. This article makes a primary inquiry into such problems as teaching resources, teaching equipment and teachers training faced by the GIS teaching being carried out in high schools in our country at present and makes some suggestions.
