STS is the abbreviation for "Science, Technology and Society". It is anew type of integrated subject emerging at the late 1960s and the early1970s in the United States, as a new stage of technology development andthe result of human's deep revise about their living conditions. STSeducation has been practised in China for over ten years since its firstintroduction in the 1980s, and has already taken its root and blossomed outin our high school science education. In our high school chemistry course,contents reflecting STS pedagogical thinking has gradually increased, asinformation on new energy, resource, new materials, and environmentalprotection have been filled up to different extent in various editions andtypes of chemistry textbooks. These contents not only reflect to a certaindegree the social development and new trends of educational reform, butalso put forward new teaching challenge to both teachers and students.Based on integrated study on STS education in China, together withthe characteristics of chemistry course, we defined STS education in highschool chemistry as the teaching activity infiltrating STS pedagogicalthinking into chemistry class. We also studied the implementation andstrategy of high school chemistry STS teaching, in association with ourcurrent textbook and course design.There are four parts in this thesis. The first part is "ExecutiveSummary and Introduction", which introduces the STS education brieflyand systematically, including its origin, development, meaning andcharacters. The second part is "Rationale and Methodology", whichdiscusses the psychological basis of implementing STS education into highschool chemistry teaching, and taking the meaning and characters of STSeducation into consideration, expatiates on the objectives, contentarrangements, teaching methods and approaches of high school chemistrySTS education. The third part is "Practice Study", which examines andtestifies the study result by real teaching practice, and comes to theconclusion that students who often enjoy STS education edification throughvarious kinds of technology activities like collecting news materials ontechnology, writing commentaries on technology issues, and debating onhot technology topics in the society, will enhance their consciousness tocatch technology information, gain their knowledge in science and advancetheir accomplishment in technology. And three teaching case including thein class infiltrating teaching design on , the lab design on and the socialpractice design on , in order to prove thepractice of STS education in chemistry teaching. The fourth part is"Conclusion", whichconcludes by briefly talking about my experience ofapplying STS education into high school chemistry teaching.
