In Modern China, the history of overseas education began from the children who weresending out by Qing government to America to study in the year 1872. After that, there aresome other overseas education movements. They are early education in Europe, studying inJapan in later Qing Dynasty, studying in America with boxer indemnity in later Qing Dynastyand early Republic of China, sedulous and forehanded study in France, studying in SovietRussia in the 1920s, and studying abroad after Anti-Japanese War. In these representativeoverseas educations, there are a lot of students who go abroad, and the influences arefarther-ranging. During the developing process of overseas education, compared to the historybackground and the status of economy and politics, individual's motivation of advocating, starting, organizing and choosing to study abroad are the impetus inside. The motivation alsotakes an important guiding role during this process. Because of the different statuses in thesociety and the different responsibilities, people certainly formed different colonies accordingto different motivations. Among them, there are officials in government, organizers andcivilians. Though they belong to different colonies, their motivations have something incommon. This thesis tries to survey the development of overseas education from the angle ofmotivation. In this process, the primary task is to find out the motivations of overseaseducation of different colonies through reviewing the effects of these motivations to thedevelopment of overseas education, and summarize their features. These tasks are all based onthe retrospections to the history of overseas educations in Modern China. What I expect muchmore is that people nowadays could know the motivations are very important to thedevelopment of overseas education. And I really wish the government can pay attention to thepeople's motivations of studying abroad, and think carefully about how to control it. Finally Ihope this study could help developing the overseas education.
