English reading is both the main body in English exams and it is also one of the main abilities to use English. Although our English teaching has been focusing on cultivating students'reading ability, the English reading classroom is the teacher-centered model, and the teaching process focuses on basic language points, like vocabulary, grammar, etc. It is not appropriate to develop student's consciousness, initiative and creativity. It is an attractive topic to cultivate student's autonomous learning ability in the English reading process. To develop students, to cultivate and develop students'autonomous ability, it is the task of the autonomous English teaching.First, the essay states the concept of English reading, the English reading process, the factors affecting English reading, concept of autonomous learning and the features of autonomous learning. English reading is closely related with the autonomous learning. So it is clear that it is possible to cultivate student's autonomous learning in high school English reading teaching.In the second and third parts of the essay, the author investigates high school students'autonomous learning situation and finds that the situation is not optimistic. The author points out that cultivating the factors that are good for autonomous learning is a good way to improve student's autonomous learning ability.In the fourth part, the author finds countermeasures for the factors that affect autonomous learning. These factors are self-efficiency, attribution, setting up goals, English reading strategy, English reading motivation, learning will, resources utilization and the roles of teacher.Autonomous English reading is a good way to improve students'English ability. After the students have got the autonomous learning ability, they can transfer this ability to other subjects and have a good foundation for future study and work.
